By Grace Cyril: The sequel to Avatar is finally here! Thirteen years after Avatar released in 2009, its second part, Avatar: The Way of Water hit the Indian screens on December 16. James Cameron’s Avatar was the highest-grossing release of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide. Avatar: The Way of Water seems to be on the same path as it opened in the Indian theatres with a whopping Rs 38 crore, according to trade estimates. Hence, the film has emerged as the second-biggest Hollywood opener of all time in India.
AVATAR 2 BOX OFFICE COLLECTION Avatar: The Way of Water has taken a roaring start at the box office in India. According to early estimates, the James Cameron-directorial earned in the range of Rs 38.50 to Rs 40.50 crore at the box office on its opening day on December 16. This makes Avatar 2 the second-highest box office opener in the Indian market. The first one was the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame which earned Rs 53.10 crore on its opening day.
The business of Avatar 2 was majorly driven by the South Indian markets like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Together, they raked in Rs 22 crore. The North, East and West Indian markets put up good occupancy too. Avatar 2 has comfortably crossed the opening day number of films like Spiderman: No Way Home, Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, and Avengers: Infinity War.
ABOUT AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER More than a decade later, Avatar’s sequel, The Way of Water, will be seeing the light of the day on December 16. The film traces the life of the Sully family comprising Jake, Neytiri and their kids. Steven Lang’s Quaritch and his tribe attack them and how Sullys retort forms the story. The sequel is more centered around interpersonal relationships and is about protecting families. The film features Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldaana, and Kate Winslet, among others, in lead roles. Avatar: The Way of Water will release in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on December 16, 2022.
